Dining at Nobu Hotel, Shoreditch

Words & Photos by Abi

Celebrity, rich folk & I suppose Japanese/Peruvian food lovers favourite, Nobu recently opened a Hotel in Shoreditch, so when it came to deciding where to hold a catch up lunch with my good friend Kris, I thought perfect. We made a reservation for their lounge/lobby instead of their main restaurant, as we wanted something a little more low key and chill.

The hotel has a very neutral way about it; very non-offensive, like you can’t not like it but you wouldn’t necessarily be able to say you love it either; It’s just what you make of it, which I can genuinely appreciate. Upon first appearance, I was concerned that the grey stiff looking seating options would be, well, stiff but not only were they comfy, if sitting in one of the semi-closed booths, as we were, it’s actually quite cosy and private, which leads you to think you could easily spend hours upon hours, just ordering California roll, after shrimp tempura, without a care for the outside world.

The service was essentially perfect and the general hotel staff were crazy helpful, so my general experience was not only nice but left a good enough impression on me to add it to my list of “go-to” places in East London.

So was it worth it? Is it ever worth it with Nobu? Look, on a basic level, to me, no, it wasn’t worth it, but on an ingredient and technique level, i’m sure the price is somewhat justified. Whether I can or can’t afford, I will always feel like expensive places will have to work damn hard for me to understand why what they’re about to serve me is costing me 10 times the amount I could pay at a local spot. To be fair, the food was quite nice but I think it was the £19 for two beef skewers that killed it for me. When you’re going to charge that much for so little, that better be the best damn beef i’ve ever had.

It was not.

The desserts were quite impressive; Kris & I even agreed they were the highlight of the meal and I would easily go back or stop by if I was in the area to have the Vanilla Miso Tart with a scoop of their matcha ice-cream.

I didn’t stay, visit or see the bedrooms or any of the presumed main hotel features, so this is 100% not a review or full insight into the whole hotel; simply just their restaurant. Oh & by the way, whether you eat in the lobby or the main restaurant, apparently the menu is the same.
